Perhaps the first question to ask before confronting someone with a drug or alcohol addiction is "does this person know that they have an addiction problem?". Sometimes, people do know they they have a substance addiction, but they have either chosen not to do anything about it, or they simply can't do anything about it because the addiction is so strong and overpowering. Of course, the person may not even be aware that they have an addiction issue. This can make a difference in how you should confront the addict.
You should also spend some time thinking about your goals for performing the confrontation. Naturally, you want the person to overcome their addiction, but if alerting someone as to their addiction, do you think that they will have the willpower to overcome it alone, or do you think that they will need extensive help and rehab?
It is absolutely critical to understand that individuals with drug or alcohol addictions generally tend to have emotional instability, due to the substance altering their brain chemistry. Of course, the addiction itself may be due to an underlying mental or emotional issue which can further complicate things during the confrontation. As such, you need to be very careful in how you handle the confrontation so that it does not provoke them into feeling insecure, vulnerable or as though they are being criticized.
